Community Partnership Grants

Appliations are now being accepted for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Community Partnership Grants. The deadline is Sept. 20 for grants in the category "Jazz Journey Presenting," which is open to nonprofit organizations that hire local performers for cultural events. More grant categories will be available later this year. See below for details.

Since 1979, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation has reinvested the proceeds from Jazz Fest directly into the community — in the form of grants to arts and educational organizations — to support projects that reflect the Foundation’s mission.

Our Community Partnership Grants program has given more than $1 million to dance troupes, theater workshops, gallery showings, film productions, educational outreach programs, folk artists, music festivals and much more. By investing so much into the community, and making a concerted effort to nurture local artists and organizations, the Foundation is creating an environment in which arts and education projects can succeed over the long term.

The Jazz & Heritage Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2010-2011 Community Partnership Grants cycle in one category: “Jazz Journey Presenting: Festivals and Concerts in Music and Performing Arts.” This category provides support to nonprofit organizations that hire musicians and other performing artists for cultural events. This grant may only be applied to live public performance fees paid to musicians, dancers, actors and other onstage performers. The grant may not be applied to fees paid to nonperforming artists, such as composers, choreographers or other artistic contributors. The grant may not be used for technical or other support personnel, equipment, rentals, facilities or other services. Commercial organizations and individuals are not eligible to apply.

Completed applications, including all required supplemental materials, must be received at the Jazz & Heritage Foundation office by 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20. Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted.

For complete details, including the grant guidelines and appliation form, please see here. For a partial list of recipients in this category in last year's grant cycle, please see here.

Later this year, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation will again offer grants in the category “Heritage School Educational Programs in Music, Arts and Cultural Traditions,” which supports the hiring of creative artists to teach arts education initiatives offered by K-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, summer camps and after-school programs. For a partial list of recipients in this category in last year's grant cycle, please see here.

We also will revive a grant category that was not offered last year, "Jazz & Heritage Archive Preservation and Documentation,"  which supports work that preserves or documents our culture, including new works in various media.

In an effort to address pressing needs in our community, the Foundation later this year will unveil two new categories in the Community Partnership Grants program:

  • "Heritage School Music & Arts Education," which will support music and arts programs in New Orleans-area K-12 public schools that need supplies, instruments and instrument repair.
  • "Talent Exchange International Travel," which will support overseas travel by Louisiana musicians for performance engagements.
