Congo Square Weekend

With a symposium on Saturday and a festival on Sunday, it'll be a Congo Square Weekend. Don't miss this chance to learn about and experience the cultural importance of Congo Square, with two events presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

Congo Square: Crossroads of the Afro-Atlantic World

A symposium presented by the Foundation's Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series.
Saturday, Nov. 14
1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
At the Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart Street).
Presenters include: Ned Sublette (author of "The World That Made New Orleans"), Yale scholar, and one of the most renowned experts on African culture, Robert Farris Thompson (pictured), musician Alex LaSalle of the band Alma Moyo, Freddi W. Evans, Connie Zeanah Atkinson, Luther Gray and Herreast Harrison.
Admission: Free.

Congo Square Rhythms Festival

Sunday, Nov. 15
11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Louis Armstrong Park
Performers include Ensemble Fatien (featuring Seguenon Kone, Dr. Michael White, Sunpie Barnes, Jason Marsalis, Margie Perez and others), Bamboula 2000, the Kumbuka African Dance Company, Moyuba, Tekrema Dance Theater, Mardi Gras Indians and many more. The day begins with an open drum circle, so bring an instrument and join in.
Plus a Congo Square Marketplace with numerous food, art and craft vendors.
Admission: Free.

The third annual Fiesta Latina

Zephyr Field, 6000 Airline Hwy., Metairie.
Performers include Grupo Fantasma from Austin, Rumba Buena, Fredy Omar, Otra, Vivaz, flamenco group Ven Pa' Ca and many others.
Latin cuisine, a large crafts fair, local nonprofit organizations.
PLUS soccer games for kids and adults.

The second annual Treme Creole Gumbo Festival
Saturday, Dec. 12, and Sunday, Dec. 13
10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (both days)
The Jazz & Heritage Center
Performers include Kermit Ruffins & the BBQ Swingers, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, James Andrews, Glen David Andrews, Shamarr Allen and others. Also includes the Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar sale of official Jazz Fest merchandise and other collectibles.
