40th Annual Jazz Fest
It’s that time again! We at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation are very excited about the 40th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. The lineup is amazing, tickets are selling at a record pace and the festival starts in just a few days. We’ll see you there!
New Foundation Website
If you haven’t visited lately, our Foundation web site, www.jazzandheritage.org, has been scrubbed, sanded and given a fresh coat of paint. It's a lot easier to learn about our year-round programs and to support our efforts. Let us know what you think.
The Jazz & Heritage Gala
The 11th annual Jazz & Heritage Gala will be Thursday, April 23. Performing will be the New Orleans Rhythm & Blues All-Star Revue, featuring Allen Toussaint (pictured), Irma Thomas, Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, Robert Parker and Wanda Rouzan, along with Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews & Orleans Avenue. All proceeds support the Foundation's year-round activities. For tickets, please call (504) 410-4148.
Gospel Is Alive
Mavis Staples will headline this year's Gospel Is Alive concert, our yearly celebration of spiritual music. The free concert takes place Monday, April 27, at 10 a. m. at Tulane University’s Dixon Hall.
Community Outreach Tickets
Every year, the Foundation makes Jazz Fest accessible to the needy through our Community Outreach Tickets program. This year, the Foundation has awarded 8,500 festival tickets to more than 450 local nonprofit, educational and service organizations for use by their clients.
Sync Up Conference
Sync Up: The Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange is our second annual conference during Jazz Fest for entertainment industry professionals. These pre-fest networking sessions - held 9 a.m. to noon the Friday and Saturday of both festival weekends - address various aspects of "the biz." The full schedule is online (www.jazzandheritage.org/syncup). It's free to attend, but seating is limited so advance registration is required. Music biz pros should also check out our searchable, online directory of Louisiana music, the Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange.
Foundation Pavilion
Please visit our Foundation Pavilion at Jazz Fest. You can meet our staff and board members, learn about our programs and support our year-round efforts. It's located between the Gospel Tent and the Grandstand. This year, we’ll host a free raffle to win a signed and numbered official Jazz Fest 2009 poster or a $1,000-level membership to Fans of the Fest. We’ll also have a “satellite” Fans of the Fest tent (next to the Jazz Fest Live Recordings tent, near the Acura Stage) where you can also become a member or sign up for the raffle.
The Making of 'Kind of Blue'
The Foundation's Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series brings noted author Ashley Kahn to the Jazz & Heritage Center on May 4 for a 7 p.m. multi-media presentation on the making of Miles Davis' landmark album "Kind of Blue," now celebrating its 50th anniversary. Kahn traces Davis' path from his arrival in New York in 1944 through the recording sessions in 1959.
Jazz Journeys
Brian Blade (pictured) and his Fellowship Band, a tribute to Harold Battiste by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and a trombone orchestra led by the great Slide Hampton were all recent concerts in our Jazz Journey series. Read more.
Concerts For Seniors
The Foundation is collaborating with the New Orleans Council on Aging to present a series of traditional jazz concerts for clients of senior citizens centers throughout the New Orleans region. Drummer Bob French and his band performed on Feb. 20 and March 6. Mark Braud will lead the band on April 22. More events are scheduled through June.
Heritage School of Music
Students of our Don Jamison Heritage School of Music will perform at Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest. One of our kids is heading to L.A. to join the 2009 Grammy Jazz Band. Members of Preservation Hall taught workshops (above) on second-line parade beats. Shamarr Allen will perform with the Heritage School students in a May 16 fund-raising concert. And the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will perform for elementary school students at the Jazz & Heritage Gallery. Read more.
Community Partnership Grants
The Foundation has awarded more than $250,000 to 118 arts and education projects in the 2008-2009 cycle of our Community Partnership Grants program.
