The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series presents author Ashley Kahn in a multi-media presentation on the making of Miles Davis' masterpiece "Kind of Blue," Monday, May 4, 7 p.m., at the Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St.).
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will present the next installment of its Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 4, at the Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart Street).
The event is free and open to the public.
Ashley Kahn, the well-known jazz journalist, author and radio producer, will give a multi-media presentation on the events and personalities that influenced the making of Miles Davis' landmark recording, "Kind of Blue," now celebrating its 50th anniversary. Kahn traces Davis' path from his arrival in New York in 1944 through the recording sessions in 1959.
The presentation is geared for music fans and the general public alike, and includes examples of music that influenced Davis on the 15-year road to the making of "Kind of Blue," including: audio bites from interviews with the trumpeter; images and video of the famous Manhattan studio in which the album was recorded; and a rare 23-minute documentary featuring Jimmy Cobb (the lone surviving member of the Kind of Blue band), Herbie Hancock, Ed Bradley, Jackie McLean, Bill Cosby and others.
Kahn will interview two veterans of the "Kind of Blue" sessions, Jimmy Cobb and Larry Willis, on Saturday, May 2, 2:30 p.m., at the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell.
