January 25 Community Meeting

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will host a community meeting to seek neighborhood input on plans to convert the building at 1225 North Rampart Street into a state-of-the-art education and community center.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m., and will take place at 1225 North Rampart Street.

The building is the former Tharp Sontheimer Laudumiey funeral home, which the Jazz & Heritage Foundation purchased in 2007.

Since then, the Foundation has used the building for occasional events, such as the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival and the Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series. The building was also host to an installation during the Prospect 1 art biennial.

After extensive internal deliberations, the Foundation and its architects have developed a plan to convert the building – now known as the Jazz & Heritage Center – into a permanent home for the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music, the Founation’s signature education program.

The Foundation invites members of the community to see and comment on the plans before it is presented to the Historic District Landmarks Commission for final approval.

The building’s historic façade will be beautified and preserved, and the building’s overall footprint will remain mostly unchanged. Significant improvements will be made to the interior, however. And the rear additions to the building will be reconfigured into an auditorium that can be used for small performances, lectures, community meetings and other public uses.

The Foundation invites the public to learn about and comment on this exciting development.

The Foundation is currently preparing a major capital campaign to help finance this project. For more information about the capital campaign, please contact Marc Barnes, the Foundation’s Director of Development, by calling (504) 558-6100, or by sending an email through this link.
