Grant Winners Announced
One of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s many programs in education, economic development and culture is the Community Partnership Grants
– which redistribute the proceeds from Jazz Fest directly into the community to support programs in education and cultural programming that reflect the Foundation’s mission. The 2009-2010 grant cycle is now completed. The Foundation awarded $64,500 to 25 programs in education, and $72,500 to 36 nonprofit organizers of cultural events. Learn more about the program and see complete lists of grant winners here.
Amiri Baraka Lecture
The Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series will present poet, author and activist Amiri Baraka on Thursday, March 25, at Dillard University’s Lawless Memorial Chapel (map

Henry Butler in DC Event
The amazing pianist/singer/composer Henry Butler will perform on Thursday, March 18, in Washington, DC, in a Fans of the Fest

Gala Salutes Dr. John
Save the date: The 12th annual Jazz & Heritage Gala will take place Thursday, April 22, at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside hotel (map). This year's black-tie bash features a tribute to Dr. John with the maestro himself, Jon Cleary and other special guests. Proceeds from the Gala benefit the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music
. For info on tickets, which include a special Gala Pass to Jazz Fest, and sponsorship, see here.
Hammer, Nail, Paint - Help
Last year, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation and radio station WWOZ launched the Community Day of Service - a work day for volunteers at Habitat For Humanity's Musicians Village - under the umbrella of our Raisin' the Roof program. The 2010 Community Day of Service will be on Wednesday, April 28 - between Jazz Fest weekends. To volunteer, please see the e-mail link on our Raisin' the Roof
program page, here.
Sync Up Conference 2010
Two years ago, the Foundation launched Sync Up - a conference for entertainment industry professionals such as festival talent buyers and film/TV music supervisors - held on the mornings of both Jazz Fest weekends. The 2010 Sync Up conference
will be April 23-24 and April 30-May 1, with workshops on the international festival market, licensing music to film and TV, and using social networking and other new media to promote and sell music. Admission is free, but seating is limited so advance registration is required. Register online here.
The Gig Machine
The Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange is a searchable online database of Louisiana music. It's a free service to connect our local musicians with the people who hire bands to perform at events such as festivals, or the folks who select the music you hear in movies, TV shows, commercials and videogames. All Louisiana musicians - in any genre - are invited to join. Need help? There's a great video tutorial
about how to create a page on the Talent Exchange online here.
Mardi Gras Marching Music
The Jazz & Heritage Foundation has partnered with the Big Easy Foundation to create a pilot program in which local high school students learn to write new arrangements for classic Mardi Gras songs - then teach them to their schools' marching bands, to be performed on the street at Mardi Gras parades. The 18-month program is nearing completion. Local public radio station WWNO did a story on the project, which you can hear here.
Heritage School In Session
The Spring 2010 semester of the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music is off to a great start. Thanks to our partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the legendary bass player Ron Carter will give a workshop for Heritage School students on Jan. 23, and pianist/educator Barry Harris
will be back for another clinic on Feb. 25. The free after-school music program is open to kids ages 11 to 17; if you missed the auditions, you can still join. Call (504) 558-6100 for more information, or visit the program web page here.
