What A Fest It Was

The 41st annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell is a wrap - and it was a great one. The Jazz & Heritage Foundation - the nonprofit that owns Jazz Fest - had a busy few weeks as well. Here's a recap.

A Fabulous Jazz Fest

A Fabulous Jazz Fest

Pearl Jam, Simon & Garfunkel, Earth, Wind & Fire, Frankie Beverly & MAZE, the funky Meters and many, many others all played to joyous crowds numbering more than 375,000. Who was your favorite performer? Log on to the Jazz Fest message forum and share your stories. Photo courtesy of Zack Smith.

Raisin' the Roof

Raisin' the Roof

More than 75 volunteers from all around the country helped to build houses for Habitat for Humanity as part of our second annual Community Day of Service at the Musicians Village on April 28. The volunteer day was co-hosted by the Jazz & Heritage Foundation and radio station WWOZ. See the photo gallery here. Thank you to all who donated their time.

Musical M*A*S*H Unit

Musical M*A*S*H Unit

The Jazz & Heritage Foundation partnered with the Tipitina's Foundation to fix band instruments for local high schools as part of our Community Day of Service. At the Musicians Village, seven volunteer technicians staffed a musical M*A*S*H Unit , fixing some 125 horns before the day was done. Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis and Shamarr Allen each gave clinics on proper instrument care and maintenance to the students from Warren Easton, St. Augustine and West Jefferson high schools. See the photo gallery here.

Dr. John Tribute at the Gala

Dr. John Tribute at the Gala

The fabulous Dr. John was the honoree our 12th annual Jazz & Heritage Gala at the Hilton Riverside Hotel on April 22. In addition to the Night Tripper, guest performers included Jon Cleary, Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes and Guitar Slim Junior. Proceeds from the sold-out, black-tie fundraiser will benefit the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music. Our thanks to all who attended. Photo by Bernie Saul.

The legendary Blind Boys of Alabama (pictured) performed in the 2010 Gospel Is Alive! concert, the free annual senior citizen outreach effort of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. There was a packed house for the April 26 concert at the New Hope Baptist Church, which also featured the Mahalia Jackson Youth Choir. Photo by Girard Mouton III.

Students from both campuses of our free after-school program, the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music, performed at Jazz Fest, as they do every year. Our kids also performed at the Jazz & Heritage Gala as well as at French Quarter Fest. Photo by Leslie Cooper.

Sync Up Conference

Sync Up Conference

The third annual Sync Up conference at the New Orleans Museum of Art was a smash. Times-Picayune TV columnist Dave Walker blogged from the conference about HBO series "Treme" co-creator Eric Overmyer 's keynote address. See video of it here, as well as clips of music supervisors Blake Leyh and Gary Calamar on the panel about licensing music to film and TV. Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews (pictured) spoke on a panel about his career. For the complete schedule of Sync Up conference sessions, see here. From the Archive

From the Archive

The Jazz & Heritage Archive's exhibit on "Jazz Fest Weddings" in the Grand Stand was a ringing success. The Archive is still collecting images from those who have taken their vows at the festival over the years. Also, video recordings from oral histories at the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage are now in the Archive and available to researchers. For details, send an email to the Archive by clicking here.

Our membership organization, Fans of the Fest, had two info areas at Jazz Fest - and more than 50 new members joined during the festival. More than 250 folks took our trivia quiz for a chance to win a Jazz Fest poster. Your membership contributions support the year-round programming of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation.
